The Power of God to Answer Prayer

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” – Matthew 7:7

Have you ever stopped to reflect on the incredible power of prayer? Prayer is powerful provided it connects people to the one and true God.

Idols are useless and do not have power to answer prayer, “they have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell. They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.” (Psalm 115:4-8).

God’s power to answer prayers is rooted in His divine attributes.

  • He omnipotent – all powerful- God has unlimited power to accomplish anything according to His will, including the miraculous. No request is too big for God to handle. “Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.” — Jeremiah 32:17
  • He is omniscient – all knowing- God knows everything—past, present, and future—including the needs, motives, and circumstances of those praying. God answers prayers with perfect wisdom and understanding of what is truly best. “Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.” — Psalm 139:4
  •  He is omnipresent – present everywhere at all times, which means He hears and answers prayers no matter where they are offered. God’s presence ensures that no prayer goes unheard. “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?” — Psalm 139:7
  • He is sovereign – God has supreme authority and control over all creation, allowing Him to align circumstances and outcomes to fulfil His purposes. God orchestrates events to answer prayers in His perfect timing and way. “The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all.” — Psalm 103:19
  • He has Infinite Love and Compassion. God deeply loves and cares for His creation, motivating Him to respond to prayers with kindness and mercy. God’s responses are always for the ultimate good of those who pray. “The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.” — Psalm 145:8
  •  He has power to perform miracles. God has the ability to transcend natural laws, enabling miraculous answers to prayers. God can intervene supernaturally when it aligns with His will. “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” — Matthew 19:26
  • He has authority over all creation – God governs all aspects of the universe—nature, life, and death—and uses His creation to fulfil His purposes. God can use nature or events to answer prayers. “He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.” — Psalm 107:29
  • He has the power to forgive sins and cleanse hearts. God answers prayers for forgiveness, transforming lives and restoring relationships with Him. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness”.-  1 John 1:9
  • He is our provider – God has the power to provide for every physical, emotional, and spiritual need. God is capable of answering prayers for daily sustenance, guidance, and support. “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:19
