“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” — Proverbs 18:21
Words are powerful. They can build up or tear down, heal or wound, save or destroy. Nowhere is this truth more tragically illustrated than in the story of Doeg the Edomite in 1 Samuel 22.
A Reckless Tongue, A Tragic Outcome
Doeg, a servant of King Saul, had witnessed Abimelech the priest giving provisions and Goliath’s sword to David. When Saul, in his jealousy and paranoia, sought someone to accuse the priests of treason, Doeg eagerly stepped forward. His words, spoken not in truth but in malice, led to the king ordering the slaughter of 85 priests of the Lord and the total destruction of Nob, their city. Men, women, children, and even livestock perished—all because of a single reckless report.
What a sobering reminder of how our words can have devastating consequences! Doeg’s tongue became a weapon that fuelled Saul’s wrath, leading to an unspeakable massacre.
The Power to Destroy
James 3:6 warns us that “The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.”
Gossip, slander, false accusations, and careless words can destroy reputations, break relationships, and even end lives. How often do we, like Doeg, speak without thinking of the harm our words can cause? Do we repeat information for our own gain, without regard for its impact?
The Power to Give Life
Thankfully, the tongue does not only bring destruction—it also has the power to bring life. Proverbs 15:4 tells us, “The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.”
Instead of using our words to wound, we can use them to encourage, to speak truth in love, and to bring healing. Jesus Himself said in John 6:63, “The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.” As His followers, we are called to speak words that reflect His love and grace.
Guarding Our Tongues
David, who narrowly escaped Doeg’s betrayal, later wrote in Psalm 141:3, “Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips.”
Let this be our prayer today. May we be mindful of our words, using them to build up rather than tear down, to bless rather than curse, and to bring life rather than death.
