Self help Versus Faith

Trst

“So she said to Abram, "The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family through her." Abram agreed to what Sarai said. (Genesis 16.2 N.I.V)

Many people get impatient with God’s timing and decide to take matters into their own hands.  They rationalize wrongly that “God helps those who help themselves” and follow culture and widely accepted solutions to their problem. Sarah, a woman who exhibited great love for her husband, took this path and rationalized that since God had promised Adam a son, and she was getting too old, she should bend to the cultural practice of having another woman in their marriage. What resulted as in all cases of polygamy are bitterness, jealousy and strife.  And the nation of Israel through Isaac (Sarah and Abraham's covenant son), has to this day been bitter enemies with the Arabs nations which arose out of the maidservant’s son Ishmael.

There are many customs which are socially acceptable but not right in God’s eyes. Our common sense and morals of the day may not necessarily be within God's will and we need to pray for God's direction. Works (including sacrifices similar to Sarah’s) should never preclude faith but should be in accordance with God’s word. We should not run ahead of God otherwise there will be serious consequences and repercussions. "There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death". Proverbs 14:12.

What are your choices?  Whom are your choices for? Not just for yourself.  Chose now whom you will serve, and that choice is going to affect the next generation, and the next generation, and the next. Choice never affects just one person alone.  It goes on and on and the effect goes out into geography and history.  You are part of history and your choices become part of history. Edith Schaeffer
