The Call of Abram

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you...So Abram went, as the Lord had told him” (Genesis 12:1-4 NIV)

Abram (later Abraham) is the spiritual father of all who live by faith.  He listened to the word of God and obeyed without knowing where the Lord was leading him. His hope rested wholly on God’s assurance. Even though he made mistakes where sometimes he put matters in his own hands, he walked patiently with God. He believed, even though he never got to see most of the promises God made to him. However the fulfillment of all these promises became apparent to all generations that came after him and his life serves as a witness to all of us as to God’s faithfulness. We know that what God promises he delivers. “Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”^d]"> So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.” (Galatians 3:7-9). Let us also heed the call. Disobedience can only lead to ruin. Jesus, the seed of Abraham through who we are blessed, will lead us to a greatness we cannot comprehend, a secure pleasant place with a delightful inheritance (Psalm 16:5-6, 11). It is not just a physical place, but also a spiritual place where his joy rests with us now and eternally.
