The Highest Calling

Hear and Obey

“Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”(Luke 11:28).

In Luke Chapter 11 a woman who admired the wisdom and power of Jesus called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”(Luke 11:27). There are many people who consider being a parent the highest calling. In many traditional cultures, people (and especially women) were evaluated on the basis of the children they were able to have. That is why Jesus who must have understood quite well where this mother was coming from and politely replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” This is a blessing all can get.

People are blessed with different talents. While being a parent is a blessing, it is not more important than every other calling others might have. What counts is what we do with those blessings and talents to glorify God’s name: whether it is in parenting, a single life or serving in any capacity. Our whole purpose is to hear the word of God and obey it.  Everything else is weighed in light of that purpose. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives (2 Peter 3:11). That is the ultimate purpose of both men and women. In Ecclesiastes 12:13 we also read, Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole [duty] of man.
