Abraham's City

The Way

“By faith Abraham … lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God”. (Hebrews 11: 8-10 NIV)

Have you put deep roots into this transient world? God called Abraham from a comfortable existence in a civilized city - Ur where people were highly educated and had storied white washed houses with many rooms.  They however worshiped idols, and God called Abraham in order to separate him from them.

Thereafter Abraham lived in tents for even after arriving in Canaan; God did not give him the land. “He gave him no inheritance here, not even enough ground to set his foot on. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land, even though at that time Abraham had no child” Acts 7:5. Abraham and his descendants went through many trials including 400 years of slavery, but at the end of the day God delivered on his promise.

What could have sustained Abraham’s faith so much that he obeyed God and did not think of going back to his former home?  When you are called by God, he gives you a deep seated assurance that gives you the strength to respond to his call. Through the Holy Spirit, he upholds you as you go through and overcome every life crisis.  Today, the city of Ur in an ancient ruin surrounded by desert.  Have faith and look forward to the better city not built by the hands of man.

Do you wish to be great? Then begin by being. Do you desire to construct a vast and lofty fabric? Think first about the foundations of humility. The higher your structure is to be, the deeper must be its foundation. - Saint Augustine
