The desire for more

Fighting

You want what you don't have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can't get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them….”  James 4:2 N.L.T)

People desire many things; some out of necessity and need, others out of curiosity, lust, greed, and envy.  To some, forbidden things (like the tree of knowledge in Genesis) become more tantalizing. Also the desire for more can never be satisfied. Sometimes, no matter how much we pine for some things, we cannot have what we desire. We may never get rich, achieve that powerful position, and get the right man or woman to marry, have children, or travel to all those places in the world we wish to see.

Our desires can make us do extremely bad things. Some scheme to get by might what is not theirs by right. They fight and even kill to get what they want. It is good to pray and work diligently and peacefully for the things we want, but our happiness should not depend on these things. We can survive with less and we should not forget to be grateful for what we do have.

*****

“May we never let the things we can't have, or don't have, or shouldn't have, spoil our enjoyment of the things we do have and can have. As we value our happiness let us not forget it, for one of the greatest lessons in life is learning to be happy without the things we cannot or should not have.” -Richard L. Evans
