Standing with those who Weep and Mourn

St Peter weeping

“Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” Romans: 12:15 (NIV)

A family friend passed away and I am reminded that on this earth, just as there is time to laugh and dance, there will be times of weeping and mourning. Some are lost when they are young and others when they are old, but they are beloved of someone and grief sets in. When Jesus saw the sadness in Mary and Martha after the death of Lazarus, he was moved to tears. “Jesus wept” (John 11:35. Jesus was there for his friends and he did all in his power to restore their happiness. We are not able to bring others to life but we can put more life into those who are bereaved through our comfort and encouragement.

Our support and caring presence helps our friends, families and neighbours to heal. The best support is to pray for and with them; to listen with compassion; to offer practical help such as financing or undertake chores on their behalf; to be present at the ceremonies; and to follow up on their progress after laying the departed to rest. Let us also at the right time impart our faith to others so that they can know there is hope after death. As John Taylor said, ”While we are mourning the loss of our friend, others are rejoicing to meet him behind the veil
