How deep is the Spiritual River Flowing in You?

measuring the depth of the river

“He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in—a river that no one could cross”. Ezekiel 47: 6 (N.I.V)

Ezekiel 47: 1-12 talks about the river from the temple. It symbolizes how life flows from God. Swarms of living creatures live wherever this water flows and fruit trees of all kinds grow on both banks of the river. Their fruit is used for food and their leaves for healing. Their leaves never wither, and the fruits never fail to bear fruit every month. And wherever the river flows, it turns salt water fresh.

God sustains us. Without his life in us we cannot exist. Different people however have different levels of this life giving power. Some only have a trickle flowing through them. Their faith is not mature. They are like babies feeding on milk. They are consumed by the desires of the flesh. However, as they let the Holy Spirit lead them and they let Jesus crucify the passions and desires of the flesh, the water soon reaches ankle deep, then knee-deep, then waist deep, and at the stage their faith matures, the life giving water is enough to swim in; they are totally immersed and totally dependent on the Lord. They bear the fruit of the Spirit which sustains and heals them. They become filled with love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (Galatians 5: 22-25)

Faith is not something to grasp, it is a state to grow into. Though illness, heartache, misfortune or sorrow may temporarily grip us, our faith sees us through these tough times, helping us get through them and taking us ultimately, beyond.
