Celebrating Uncles and Aunts

Uncle and nephew

“So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived” Genesis 19:29 ( N.I.V.)

Did you know that July 27th is celebrated as Aunts and Uncles Day? One famous uncle was Abraham who took care of his nephew Lot and influenced his salvation when Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed.

Aunts and uncles are invaluable. They provide love, friendship and mentoring to their nephews and nieces. In many African rites such as rites of passage, or marriage rites, they play the critical role of giving sound counsel on how their nieces and nephews are expected to conduct themselves in their new responsibilities. While in many cases aunts and uncles are either blood relatives or by marriage, many children also consider their parents’ close friends as their aunts and uncles and many children refer to those who nurture and take care of them at home the same way. Some church mentoring programs also pair off children with adults who play a similar role to aunts and uncles. This is especially important for children who come from trouble homes or those who do not have either a father or a mother in their lives. Both groups; the uncles and aunts and the nephews and nieces gain a lot from their relationship. One can never have too much love, and appreciation from somebody not legally responsible for you does a lot for self image. There is potential for fun, a different perspective about life, extra financing, and family mediation. Appreciate your uncles and aunts today.

Only an aunt can give hugs like a mother, keep secrets like a sister and share love like a friend.

An uncle is a bond of faith that even time can't sever; a gift to last all of our lives. An uncle is forever.
