Dealing With People Who Annoy You

Angry dog

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Proverbs 15:1 (N.I.V)

Wherever we work, we are bound to meet people who are inconsiderate and annoying. This gets us angry and frustrated. Most of the time however, we need the job so are not free to just walk away. We have to deal with it. The Bible tells us that the best way to deal with such situations is to stay calm and collected and control our anger so that we can give a gentle answer. This prevents us from saying or doing something that we may regret later and helps us to heal by refusing to keep the wounds open for long. It takes the steam out of the satisfaction of those who want to annoy us by “putting hot coals on their heads”. See Proverbs 25: 21-22. It also reduces unhealthy stress which can make us sick. We also have to remember that sometimes others may not intentionally mean to annoy us but we are too sensitive and quick to take offence. Sometimes we are to blame; others annoy us in retaliation of our behavior towards them, and as is often the case we are most annoyed by others who display the same character weaknesses we have. We should therefore learn to manage our anger and grow in character. We should also remember to forgive others who cause us grief in sight of Christ, “… in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes” 2 Corinthians 2:11.
