Our Common Destiny

The Titanic

“Have we not all one father? Has not one God created us?” Malachi 2.10

The Titanic had 2,207 people on board. There were men and women of all ages, they ranged from the wealthiest people in the world to the poorest immigrants seeking a better life in America, and spoke more than a dozen languages. They were a good representation of the diversity of the world’s society where irrespective of our social standing, age, race or gender we have a common destiny whereas life can end at any time, without notice and when we are feeling most invulnerable.

While in the world however, some have many privileges not accorded others.  When they started out, some passengers were in first class enjoying a host of luxuries and facilities including a swimming pool, a gymnasium, squash court, electric bath, expensive furniture and decorations. Those in second class and in third class enjoyed progressively less comforts. When the ship started sinking, those in first class were given first priority in boarding the few lifeboats available and a higher percentage of them were saved. For women 97% in first class, 86 % in second class and 46% in third class were saved. The ship’s owner was also among these saved leaving many of his passengers and crew to their fate. Indeed life in the world is not fair. It is only in the Lord’s Kingdom where, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3.28
