Pride of Titanic Proportions

The Titanic

“Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall” Proverbs 16:18 N.I.V

The saga of the passenger liner Titanic, which sank on 15th April 1912 killing more than 1,500 people, can be used as a symbol of human pride much like the “Tower of Babel” in the Bible (Genesis 11:1-9). The ship, decked in every imaginable luxury aboard a liner was said to be the cutting edge of technology and dubbed unsinkable. It was reported that one of the deck hands had said, “God Himself could not sink this ship!”  He was soon proved wrong.

It is reported that the captain of the ship and his team refused to heed several warnings about dangerous icebergs from other ships. They had faith in the invulnerability of their ship. Captain Smith himself declared that he could not "imagine any condition which would cause a ship to founder. Modern shipbuilding has gone beyond that." They continued on the course they had charted until disaster struck.

Human beings never learn. Even today many people are buoyed by belief in themselves, their prosperity, technological and scientific advancements. They fail to put God in the equation no matter how many warnings and lessons from history. They neglect their spiritual advancement which is the most important ingredient that makes a human being complete. They instead worship at altars of man made projects which no matter how advanced in human eyes can never touch God’s might. They are but Towers of Babel; signs of arrogant competition with God, with man reaching the heavens or determining his own destiny through his own might.

Let us grow in the wisdom that leans on God’s power: always including him in our plans.
