Putting the Word of God in Your Heart

Holy Bible

"Therefore you shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes”. Deuteronomy 11:18 (N.K.J.V)

The word of the Lord is powerful and it is good to constantly draw on its inspiration and teachings. Sometimes however, you find yourself in situations where you want to quote the word of God but you may not always have a bible to read. Leafing through a Bible to find the right passage you want also takes time. Jesus had spent a lot of time in his youth studying the available scriptures. Later he was able to quote them from memory to reinforce Gods will and his obedience; for example during his temptations (Matthew 4:1-11), he used them to resist the devil. As Ephesians 6:7 says, the word of God is a powerful sword to use in spiritual warfare.

It is good when you can recall verses that you have memorized to suit the occasion. You become a walking Bible that you can reflect on as you go about your business, while waiting, or traveling. Your thoughts become purified and you become what you think - filled with the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Your heart becomes your living guide as you make decisions big and small. You are able to testify: “I have stored up your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11) and it will be said of you,” The law of his God is in his heart; his feet do not slip.”(Psalm 37:31)

With the Bible in you, you are also able to use appropriate verses quoted directly from scripture to advise, encourage and comfort others.  How powerful it is to use the right words! “You show that you are a letter from Christ… written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. (2 Corinthians 3:3).
