Rooted in the Lord

Baobab Tree

“Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness” Colossians 2:7 (N.L.T)

The Baobab tree has been called the tree of life because all parts can be used; the fruit as food, its hollow trunk as shelter, the bark for cloth and rope, and the leaves as medicine. It can live for thousands of years and grow to thirty meters tall with its trunk up to eleven meters wide.  It can withstand many months of extremely dry weather. What makes this possible?  The tree has deep tap roots that help it to suck water deep underground and a trunk which can store up to one hundred and twenty thousand liters of water.

We can learn from the baobab’s adaptations. If we grow deep tap roots into Christ and become full of the Holy Spirit we grow very strong and unshakeable in faith. Adversity will not destroy us and we bear many fruits. Others will shelter in our “trunk” for comfort and encouragement and we will live  for ever

Really, then, our problem is not weakness, but independence! And in covenant, you die to independent living.
