Walking in the Light of God

“But now, all you who light fires and provide yourselves with flaming torches go, walk in the light of your fires and of the torches you have set ablaze. This is what you shall receive from my hand: You will lie down in torment.” Isaiah 50:11

There is nothing in the world that gives confidence like being sure of what to do, how to do it and when to do it. You feel powerful, secure and self sufficient in your intelligence, experience and accomplishments. You “walk in the light of your fires and of the torches you have set ablaze”.  You even glory in your own righteousness; in your good works, your kindness and charity. You compare your work for the Lord and that of people you know and think you have done much better; you believe your understanding of the Bible and Christianity in higher than that of others and that the Holy Spirit is manifested in you more. In your own judgment you are a superior person and bound for heaven.

But the he Lord says of those hypocrites who depend on their own wisdom and self righteousness “This is what you shall receive from my hand: You will lie down in torment.” God looks at much more than your deeds. He looks at your thoughts, your motives, your conscience and sees every single thing you neglected to do, all you hurt without knowing, where you hardened your heart, your unforgiving spirit…  In this world we are all under grace and dependent on God’s mercy and favor. We have to depend on God to guide our path according to his heavenly wisdom.  We cannot make it alone.

Submit fully to the Lord lest you find yourself in that place of torment where there is “wailing and gnashing of teeth’ Matthew 24: 51.
