Questioning God

A rainbow

Rainbow, part of God's glory

“How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and day after day have sorrow in my heart?
How long will my enemy triumph over me?” Psalms 13:1-2 (N.I.V)

There is a story of a little girl who was busy drawing a picture. The teacher asked her,” what are you drawing? The girl answered, “A picture of God.” “But nobody knows what God looks like,” the teacher said. “They will, when I am done”, answered the little girl.

There are many things we do not know about God, for example what he looks like, where he came from, and when. The Bible does not explain these things and many of God’s ways are not open to us.

Moses wanted to be assured of God’s presence and approval as he led his people to Canaan. He asked to be allowed to see Him and was allowed a back view as God passed. (Exodus 33:23). He was not allowed to see God’s face, but God told him,” I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you.” (Exodus 33:19)

The prophet Jeremiah often got discouraged and also questioned God, but in the end he admitted that he could feel the presence of God right in his bones. “I say to myself, "I can forget the LORD and no longer speak his name." But [his word] is inside me like a burning fire shut up in my bones. I wear myself out holding it in, but I can't do it any longer…” Jeremiah 20:9

Just like David in Psalm 13, sometimes we are in great distress and feel that God has forgotten us. We wonder why he does not intervene in our situation; why He hides his face from us.  God does not always answer our questions in the way we expect or understand. However, we should always trust in His character. We must trust in his unfailing love for us, his unfailing presence and his unfailing protection.

Questioning God in sincerity and humility puts us on a search for him; for faith.  Thomas was a better believer after his doubts were erased by seeing Christ and feeling the points where He was pierced.

May all the goodness and glory of the Lord pass in front of you!
