Ordinary Men and Women

A pastor

“Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:31 (N.I.V)

What do you appreciate in others? Is it talent, character or intellect? Many people have a lot of pride in their abilities and look down on others who are not equally endowed. The Bible tells us that the Corinthian Church was divided into different cliques depending on the preachers who impressed them more. Some were for Paul who had a simple approach to preaching, others were for Apollo who preached with powerful eloquence, and some were for Peter and others for different reasons. They dwelt on the presentation and not the message of Christ. Paul wrote his first letter to them to correct divisiveness based on this attitude among other issues.  Christ’s message is simple and everyone can understand it irrespective of their worldly wisdom.

You need to concentrate on God’s word and its application to your personal situation. It should not matter who points you to Christ; sanctification is based only on transformation by Christ. God’s power to bring blessings does not depend on intellect and talents but on His wisdom, redemption and righteousness. The Holy Spirit works where there is true faith in Jesus Christ and this is often found in ordinary men and women. You should commit only to the word of God “…the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.” Acts 20:32 (N.I.V)

“When men are most sure and arrogant they are commonly most mistaken, giving views to passion without that proper deliberation which alone can secure them from the grossest absurdities”
