Take Responsibility of Your Life

A street child

A street child

"The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.” Ezekiel 18.20 (N.I.V)

When a heinous crime is revealed, we wonder what circumstances could have brought it on. Perpetrators blame their crimes on parents who did not love them, a society which marginalizes and does not appreciate them, and many other excuses. They feel that the injustice they suffered absolves them of their faults since theirs is a natural reaction.

Are you engaged in the blame game, attributing every failure in your life to your parents, your spouse, your employer, your friends and everyone else? It is true that having loving parents creates a great defense against crime; children who grow up in supportive, affectionate and accepting homes show less aggression and hostility to others. It is also true that being in an abusive relationship may result in low self esteem and stress related sickness.

However, in every situation we need to exercise personal responsibility. History may have determined what we are now, but we can change our future and create a good foundation for the future of those who depend on us. We should undertake to enter and maintain family relationships based on love and respect. We should undertake to correct wrongs we have committed to others and exercise a code of conduct where we commit to act in consideration of others. And we should also undertake to rebuild our self image based on the indwelling Holy Spirit’s power and comfort and not other people’s approval.

When you blame others, you give up your power to change.
