People whose minds are preoccupied with negative emotions such as fear, loneliness, and bitterness hamper their development because these feelings take away so much energy that they are unable to operate efficiently. Others who harbor evil thoughts like lust, greed and envy are led by these feelings to immorality and corruption. The thoughts that linger in their minds define who they are. As Jesus said, “anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart” They are already guilty as they contemplate these things.

It is important to develop discipline so that we can control our minds to think positively. As we are called to do in Hebrews 4:8 “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” This is the only way we can mature and be able to perform various tasks in our lives effectively including the good works of faith.

The battle of the mind to route out negativity is not easy. We need the help of the indwelling Holy Spirit to develop a new attitude of strength, confidence, perseverance, joy, love and everything that is good to help us take on the world. As Ephesians 4:22-23 says,” You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds”.
