Worshiping other gods

idol, golden calf

The golden calf

“Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. All this I will give you, he said, if you will bow down and worship me. Jesus said to him, Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” (Matthew 4:8-10 N.I.V)

Which gods do you worship? It is not only graven images that constitute gods. Anything that you value higher than God such as wealth, position, members of your family, and so on can constitute gods that you bow down to. Even a problem that occupies your mind so much that you fail to worship God is also a god. If you spend so much time at work that you neglect God and your family, work has become your god. If you spend all your time in church and religious duties at the expense of everything else; religion has become your God.

We are meant to love and serve God with all our hearts, minds, spirit and strength; and to do everything else in His Spirit and Truth.

"As worship begins in holy expectancy, it ends in holy obedience. Holy obedience saves worship from becoming an opiate, an escape from the pressing needs of modern life." Richard Foster
