Love Covers a Multitude of Sins

Love puts you in the shade

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8

People say regarding romance that love is blind. Many people get married when they are so deeply infatuated that they think that their partner is perfect. However, with time they discover their partner’s many flaws. At this point they have to make a conscious decision to love their partner. This is where real love starts. It is a love which can only be made perfect through God’s help because it goes against our selfish instincts and desires. Such love was demonstrated by Hosea’s dedication to his wife Gomer who was unfaithful to him, yet because God had commanded his marriage to her he kept up his commitment to her. 1Corinthians 13: 4-7 summarizes how we should love: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres”.

True love is sincere and always seeks for peace, harmony and a clear conscience in spite of others sins and failings. We love in response to God’s command to love him with all our hearts, mind and strength; and to love others as we love ourselves.
