Edifying Words

Preaching that encourages and builds

A Preacher

“If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 4:11 NIV)

Ministering to people is a great responsibility and requires that one communicates the correct revelation of God’s word. It is easy for people gifted with great oratory skills to mislead others.

In our daily life we should also minister to others. A spoken word is powerful; it can build or destroy, but once spoken it cannot be taken back. We should therefore be careful what we say; we should control our tongues by pausing to think first. Our words should encourage, comfort, teach, and guide. We should spread peace not war, seek to bless and not to curse. We should have self control so that in our anger and disappointments, we do not speak words that hurt others and destroy our relationships.

In service to God and others, we are required to use to the full all the talents and gifts we have been given. This includes our natural aptitudes such as singing, organizing, or whatever we are good at, our education and training, and also current technology. We should use all that is available to us for the glory of the Lord, and not use any power or position we have over others to do harm. We should let the light that is Christ in us shine through.

No man has prosperity so high or firm, but that two or three words can dishearten it; and there is no calamity which right words will not begin to redress.~Ralph Waldo Emerson
