Unusual Aptitude

Daniel interpreting Nebucadnezzar's dream

Daniel Interprets Nebucadnezzar's Dream

"God gave these four young men an unusual aptitude for understanding every aspect of literature and wisdom. And God gave Daniel the special ability to interpret the meanings of visions and dreams". Daniel 1:17 N.L.T

Some people have unique qualities. They either have additional senses or can see, hear, smell, taste or feel beyond what others can. They therefore understand more and their reasoning is different.

Daniel, Shadrach; Meshach; and Abednego were four of such blessed people. Chosen for training to serve in the court of King Nebucadnezzar with others who were of similar noble birth, good looks, and intelligence, they excelled beyond the capacity of all others. After their training, the King approved them for service in his palace because, "In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom". (Daniel 1:20).

What made them better? They saw beyond the obvious connection of their learning and its application to conventional life of the day to that of connectedness to God of their faith. They depended on wisdom which is greater than that available to others.  Some things which appeared rational to other people such as partaking of the excesses at the King's table (composed of rich meats and intoxicating wine) were actually less healthy for the body and mind than the (clean) vegetarian diet they chose as per the dictates of their religion. Though human wisdom equipped the other wise men and astrologers(who worshiped idols) to interpret dreams, it did not equip them to tell what the dreams were. It is only those that can hear God that such knowledge comes. "Daniel replied, “No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries ..." (Daniel 2:27-28).

Wisdom from God can give us unusual aptitude to understand things beyond current human knowledge. It can prevent brainwashing by prevailing culture through strengthening in conviction of our faith in the power of God. And we can get that wisdom through faith. The Bible says,"If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. (James 1:5). "Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. ( Proverbs 4:6-7 )

"Many of the gaps in our knowledge and understanding are simply limits of cultural and religious background".

I came to accept during my freshman year that many of the gaps in my knowledge and understanding were simply limits of class and cultural background, not lack of aptitude or application as I'd feared.
