The Feet that are Fitted with Readiness

Running

“… with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace”. (Ephesians 6:15. N.I.V)

This life is like a race or a fight and we need to be prepared for the long haul. At the end of it we should be able to say like Paul, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7). It is a tough race and battle and we therefore need to be fitted with the right shoes. The kind of shoes the runner uses can make the difference between winning and losing. A guide for selecting the best running shoes says that they need to have superior cushioning, flexibility in the right places, stability or motion control, traction on road or trails, tortional stability (stiff where needed), night-time reflectivity, and breathability. Likewise we need to have a cushion to soften the impact of the troubles we go through, we should be flexible so that we can learn and grow, we should have a firm grip of the Word and be stable and unwavering in our faith so that we it guides us, we should be thick skinned enough to withstand whatever comes our way, and we should reflect Jesus to others as an example to follow. Breathability means that the shoes are made of a material that allows body moisture and vapors to be released without overheating, feeling discomfort, or causing bad smells. This can be likened to the peace of God that knows no understanding no matter our circumstances; we do not heat up or lose our self control, but always have the inward joy of the Lord.

The art of war teaches us to rely not on the likelihood of the enemy's not coming, but on our own readiness to receive him; not on the chance of his not attacking, but rather on the fact that we have made our position unassailable.” Sun Tzu
