Focus On Getting Better, Rather Than Being Good

Very Good!

"Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone. (Luke 18:19 N.I.V)

Are you always tempted to defend yourself, to prove that you really are a good person? Sometimes we are so concerned that other people see and appreciate our righteous intentions. However, this is not always possible because people see you from their own self concept. Some people will always want to believe positive things about others, while some will always look for the negative side. The bottom line is that we are not perfect. Even Jesus who we are looking to emulate said, “Why do you call me good? ...No one is good--except God alone.”

We should therefore always try to improve ourselves rather than trying to prove to others and ourselves that we are really good people who mean well. We should take the challenge to always ask ourselves how we could have done it better or differently. We are not so fixed in our intelligence, personality, and physical aptitudes that we cannot develop or acquire new skills. God equips those he calls, just as he did with Moses. “Then Moses said to the LORD, "Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since Thou hast spoken to Thy servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.” And the LORD said to him, "Who has made man's mouth? Or who makes him dumb or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the LORD? "Now then go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth, and teach you what you are to say." (Exodus 4:10-12)

Let us aspire to continuously improve in all ways; to become better social beings and to develop deeper rooted faith. God is calling us for greater things.
