Thirsting for God

“Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” (John 19:28 N.I.V)

Jesus had sweated from the persecution and the heat of the day, he had lost a lot of blood, and he had struggled to fully accomplish his mission including praying for the forgiveness of all who had caused his suffering. With great effort he must have gathered all his remaining strength to ensure the well being of his mother and the repentant thief all through the isolation he felt from his loving father. But at last all was finished and his human strength was gone. He was very thirsty. He needed to be with God. “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” Psalm 42:1-2)

Are you thirsty for God. Our deepest and greatest need is for fellowship with God.“Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” Saint Augustine

*****

“God is waiting eagerly to respond with new strength to each little act of self-control, small disciplines of prayer, feeble searching after him. And his children shall be filled if they will only hunger and thirst after what he offers”. Richard Holloway
