The Painful Spiritual Separation from God that Ensured Our Eternal Connection to Him

Jesus at the cross

“About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" - (which means "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?") (Matthew 27:36 N.I.V)

Jesus suffered physical agony at the cross. However he suffered even more as the full effect of carrying our sins was translated into spiritual separation from God. This was the only way to ensure an acceptable sacrifice that would render all that believe in him eternal connection with God. From then onwards we can approach boldly the Holy of Holies because the curtain was destroyed forever. No longer would man require any other blood sacrifice for atonement of his sins.

“Life is wasted if we do not grasp the glory of the cross, cherish it for the treasure that it is, and cleave to it as the highest price of every pleasure and the deepest comfort in every pain. What was once foolishness to us—a crucified God—must become our wisdom and our power and our only boast in this world.” John Piper
