Superstitious Traditions

Black Cat

“And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition. And this is only one example among many others." (Mark 7:13 N.L.T)

Some people are meticulous in keeping superstitious traditions. For example children are taught that if they make a wish and blow out all the candles on their birthday cake in one breath, it will come true. Brides are taught that if they want to ensure a happy marriage, they have to wear something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. Some people avoid the number 13 considering it unlucky, and panic when a black cat crosses their path considering it an ill omen. Why not teach people to say a simple prayer to God?

Only God is the source of all power; not our ability to blow, not the colors we wear, not the date nor the cat that crosses our path.  Let us make God part of our ceremonies.

"Man's mind is like a store of idolatry and superstition; so much so that if a man believes his own mind it is certain that he will forsake God and forge some idol in his own brain". John Calvin
