Love Seasoned With Salt

Salt Shaker

“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. (Colossians 4:6 NIV)

Some subjects are very difficult to tackle. These include personal relationships, sexuality, and illness.  No matter how strong your convictions are about certain subjects, and how much you feel others are getting it wrong, you must be sensitive to people’s feelings. You do need to shed the light but you need to do it with love, kindness and respect.  The timing has to be right and you must learn to speak the truth in ways that do not hurt other people, given their circumstances.

Jesus was very tactful and effective in dealing with the woman caught in adultery and also her accusers who were full of hypocrisy and intent on trapping him(John 8:1-11). He made the truth palatable: like food seasoned with the right amount of salt. Everybody was able to process it in their own minds and make the right decision. We can be assertive without being aggressive, and make a point without making an enemy.  “Christians should champion their one true God, exalted be He, through the hosts of forbearance, of submission, of an upright character, of goodly deeds, and of the choicest and most refined words”.

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen”.  Ephesians 4:29.
