Jubilee Christian Church recently held a conference entitled “Woman of Distinction”. It was attended by many, especially young women who praised and worshiped the Lord and celebrated their womanhood.  The conference sought to empower women by teaching how they can work with God to prevail against their circumstances. The conference was hosted by Reverend Kathy Kiuna and featured guest ministers Reverend Allan Kiuna, Dr. Wanda Turner, Pastor Esther Obasi-Ike, Pastor Joan Kamau and guest psalmists Chevelle Franklin  and Pastor Agu Uche. Popular local artiste Emmy Kosgei as well as a few local gospel singers also entertained and ministered to those in attendance.

One of the main speakers was Dr. Wanda Turner from the United States of America. She is a highly esteemed Christian author and also a motivational speaker. One of the most memorable stories in her talks during the convention was her pain on finding out that her minister husband had been unfaithful to her just one year after they had started a church, and the consequent struggle to show love and forgiveness amid feelings of rejection and betrayal. She has a special ministry for pastor’s wives.

Wise sayings from Dr Wanda Turner’s teaching:

“Your mess becomes your message”

“Find out God’s calendar for you”

“New testimonies mean new tests”

“Sometimes God tells you to do something that will keep you out of your schedule, in order to keep you in your schedule”

“It is not about the person who has wronged you. It is about you and God.”

Chevelle Franklyn from Jamaica, a popular reggae gospel artiste also ministered through song and testimony to the women.  She started out quite poor in a Jamaican ghetto but grew to overcome her circumstances to be a famous singer. At first she was singing secular music, but on giving her life to the Lord, she changed to gospel. This was on realizing that the money alone did not make her happy. Like most of the singers she socialized with, she felt quite empty despite fame and riches. She encouraged the women never to lose hope because just like her rise from the ghetto, God knows the location of each one of us. It was no mistake that Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well. We are all wondrously made and need to accept ourselves and not sell ourselves short.

She also warned about pride when God has blessed us with worldly things. “Humility is everything” she said, “Do not get hyped by your success, Satan was brought down by pride.”

Pastor Joan used Rahab the harlot’s story to demonstrate that God can use and bless anybody no matter how low they have descended. Rahab risked everything for a new life. She was later respectably married to a man called Salmon (which means clothing) and became an ancestor of Jesus. No matter how low and naked we are, if we seek God and repent God will clothe us with his righteousness and all the past transgressions will be forgotten.

Pastor Esther Obasi-Ike used the life of Daniel to demonstrate to the women how they can be outstanding; become women of distinction. One of her teachings was that “the greatest captivity is mental captivity – the wrong mindset”. Daniel excelled in even in captivity. His mind was working and did not forget God. We need to discover our gifts and talents and believe in ourselves. We need to affirm, “I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13.  Pastor Obasike also taught that we also need to do whatever we have been called to do with all our hearts, like we are doing it for God. That way we can never fail.
