Clock

Many years ago, I went to see my sick friend in hospital. I was feeling totally stressed out owing to the toxic environment at my place of work. While I noticed that she was sweating, I did not think her illness was serious. I felt led to pray with her but so many other people came to visit and I did not have the courage to lead them all in prayer. We talked about many mundane things, and when visiting hours were over, we all left and I hailed her goodbye, promising to visit the next day. She died a few hours later the same day.

In my grief, I thought of what a good friend she had been to me, the confidences we had shared, and how we had supported one another in times of joys and sorrows. But I had not prayed with her in her hour of greatest need because I did not perceive it. She must have needed me to pray, going by the faith she professed. She must have needed my encouragement, but I did not have the presence of mind to give it, and a few hours later the chance was forever lost. I did not seize the opportunity presented to me, and I can only live with regrets.

Since then I have tried to be more present and live each moment to the full, and I pray that I keep on growing.

Is there an opportunity you missed that you deeply regret?  Today presents an opportunity to do your very best. Carpe Diem - pluck the day, trusting as little as possible in the next one. As Shakespeare said, better three hours too early than a second too late.

“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” Ephesians 5: 15-16

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2
