A gift of flowers

" She did what she could ..."

Sometimes we have little to give; like the poor widow who had only two small coins to her name, but offered it all. “Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.” Mark 12: 41-42
The rich people THREW in their large amounts. Everybody could see and applaud them. But, the poor lady PUT IN, (reverently), her offering of all she had. “But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” Mark 12: 42- 44.
Many might have questioned her wisdom. Couldn’t she have used her little money to buy bread instead?

Sometimes we are able to give extravagant gifts. Mary anointed Jesus with very expensive perfume, which He really appreciated, but the disciples were aghast at the wisdom of her act. They said, “…indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly”. But Jesus said, “She has done a beautiful thing to me... She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

Let us give our best, all we can, to the Lord and others, out of the richness of our hearts. Others may not get it, and we may open ourselves out for scorn, but the Lord knows the value we put into our offering. He can gauge our sincerity and the measure of our gratitude for all he has blessed us with; because it is all His.

“Any temporal possession can be turned into everlasting wealth. Whatever is given to Christ is immediately touched with immortality.” A.W. Tozer (1897-1963)
