Passion Flower

What are your passions, and how do you pursue them?

The story of Lamech is the first instance of polygamy recorded in the Bible. “And Lamech took two wives. The name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah”. Genesis 4:19 ESV.

He was very clever in all things worldly. He was good in the arts (poetry) and the sciences (brass, iron, and farming industries). He was however consumed by his own sense of power and did whatever he saw fit. He had no place for God in his heart. His name means “the wild man”, "a captive," or "someone who is ruled." He was ruled by his passions and not the law of God.

The meaning of the name of his first wife Adah means ornament or adorned, while Zillah means shadow or shady. Lamech probably chose Adah for her loveliness but soon got tired of her and sought excitement in another woman; a shadow of a wife, who offered more excitement to him.

Henceforth, many of the Israel patriarchs were polygamous. The practice corrupted their hearts and brought on untold misery to many.“…the practice of polygamy, like all other breaches of God's institutions, has been a fruitful source of corruption and misery. ~ Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary

But passion is not bad. Even the passion for beauty and excitement is not bad. What is wrong is pursuing your passions in wrong ways. “Human nature, if it is healthy, demands excitement; and if it does not obtain its thrilling excitement in the right way, it will seek it in the wrong. God never makes bloodless stoics; He makes no passionless saints.”~ Oswald Chambers

May you seek the Lord's help to ensure the right outlet for your passions.
